How long does a CRA tax refund take in Canada?

Updated October 2026 · 8 min read · Taxes
The CRA says refunds on electronically filed returns are processed within 2 weeks, and a paper return is usually processed within 12 weeks. Direct deposit is the fastest way to get paid; without it the CRA mails a cheque. A detailed review, a request for more information, or a debt the CRA can offset can delay it.

Waiting on a refund is stressful, mostly because the CRA gives you very little to look at until it finishes. This guide puts the official timelines in one place, shows you where to look for your status, and explains the specific things that stretch a two-week refund into two months. All timing figures below come from the CRA.

CRA refund timelines at a glance

The CRA publishes two different kinds of numbers, and people often mix them up. One is the time it takes to issue a notice of assessment (NOA), the document that tells you what the CRA decided about your return. The other is the time to receive money. For most people the refund follows the NOA closely, so the numbers below work as a guide.

How you fileWhat the CRA saysWhere it says it
Online (NETFILE) with direct depositWithin 2 weeksRefunds page; tax tips
Online, no direct depositNOA within 2 weeks; refund by cheque in the mailRefunds page (cheque if direct deposit is not set up)
Paper returnNOA and refund usually within 12 weeksPaper return page; CRA service level page
Non-resident or international filersWithin 16 weeksRefunds page

These apply to returns filed on or before the due date. The CRA also notes that some returns take longer: a detailed review, multiple returns, a bankruptcy or deceased-taxpayer return, or a request for more information all slow things down. Treat 2 weeks and 12 weeks as targets, not guarantees.

Direct deposit is the biggest lever you control

The CRA sends your refund to the bank account it has on file at the time you send your return. If direct deposit is not set up before you file, it issues a cheque to the address on file. A cheque adds mailing time, and if you moved without updating your address it can be returned. The CRA says it will still calculate later payments in that case but will not issue them until your address is updated.

In its 2026 filing-season tips, the CRA reported that last season it issued over 19 million refunds, averaging about $2,000, and that 79% went out by direct deposit. It also advises signing up before you file. If you want a refund to land in an account that earns interest, our guide to what a high-interest savings account is explains what to look for.

How to check your refund status

  1. Wait for the assessment. The CRA says status is available only after it has completed the assessment, so a blank status in the first days is normal.
  2. Sign in to your CRA account. You will see your return status, refund amount and your notice of assessment or reassessment. Since February 2026, the CRA says notices of assessment are viewable only in your CRA account, and a backup multi-factor authentication option may be requested.
  3. Or call 1-800-959-8281. The automated line runs 6 am to 3 am ET every day, and live agents are available 8 am to 8 pm ET, Monday to Friday, except public holidays. Have your SIN, full name, date of birth, complete address and your notice of assessment ready.

Filing a second return will not speed things up; wait for the assessment, then use your CRA account to request any change.

Why a refund can be late, smaller or missing

ReasonWhat happens
Detailed reviewThe CRA selects the return or asks for more information or documents. The refund waits until it is resolved.
Set-off for debtsThe CRA may keep all or part of a refund for an amount you owe, a garnishment order, or certain federal, provincial or territorial debts such as student loans or benefit overpayments.
Outstanding returnsMissing GST/HST or payroll returns or remittances for a sole proprietorship or partnership can also be offset.
Bad address or no direct depositA cheque goes to the address on file. If you moved, it can come back to the CRA.
Small amountGenerally no refund is issued if it is $2 or less.
Amount differs from what you expectedRead the assessment section of your notice of assessment or reassessment to see what changed.

Worked example: two filers, same day

Priya and Marc both finish their returns on March 10. These are illustrations using the CRA's targets, not predictions.

FilerHowCRA targetApproximate date
PriyaNETFILE, direct deposit set up2 weeksMarch 24
MarcPaper return by mail12 weeksJune 2

The gap is 10 weeks, or about two and a half months of waiting on money that was already overpaid. The planning point is simple: do not commit to a purchase based on a refund that has not been issued. Keep an emergency fund so a delayed refund does not become a missed payment.

Tax filing dates and when to file

The CRA's published dates for the 2025 tax year (filed in 2026) were:

DateWhat it was
February 23, 2026NETFILE opened for 2025 returns
March 2, 2026RRSP, PRPP and SPP contribution deadline for the 2025 tax year
March 9, 2026SimpleFile services opened
April 30, 2026Filing and payment deadline for most individuals
June 15, 2026Filing deadline if you or your spouse or partner is self-employed (payment still due April 30)
January 29, 2027NETFILE and ReFILE close for 2025 and earlier returns

Dates for the 2026 tax year (the 2027 filing season) had not been published on the CRA pages checked for this article, so we are not guessing at them. Check the CRA's important dates for individuals page when they appear. If you are planning ahead, our RRSP contribution deadline guide explains how the 60-day window feeds into the same season.

Slips are generally issued by the end of February. If one has not arrived by the end of March, the CRA suggests contacting the issuer. Filing late does not only slow a refund: if you owe tax, a late-filing penalty applies. Our first-time filing guide walks through the full process, and the low-income filing guide explains why even a no-tax return is worth filing.

Does the CRA pay interest on your refund?

Sometimes. For 2025 returns, the CRA says it may pay compound daily interest on a refund, starting on the latest of May 30, 2026, the 30th day after you filed, or the day you overpaid. Because rates are set quarterly, look up the current prescribed rate on the CRA's page rather than relying on a number from a blog.

Questions people ask

How long does a CRA tax refund take?

The CRA says its refund processing time for returns filed electronically on or before the due date is within 2 weeks. Its service standard for paper returns is a notice of assessment within 12 weeks of receiving the return, and the refund is usually processed in that same window. Detailed reviews, requests for more information and debts the CRA can offset can all add time.

How long does a refund take with direct deposit?

The CRA's tax tips say refunds take two weeks when you file online and are signed up for direct deposit. If direct deposit is not set up before you file, the CRA sends a cheque by mail instead, which takes longer.

How long does a paper return take?

The CRA says paper returns are usually processed within 12 weeks, and that your notice of assessment and any refund are usually processed within that time. A tax tip also says it may take up to eight weeks to get a refund by mail, so allow up to 12 weeks before you worry.

How do I check my CRA refund status?

Sign in to your CRA account to see your return status, refund amount and notice of assessment. You can also call 1-800-959-8281. The CRA says status is available only after it has completed your assessment, and you will need your SIN, full name, date of birth, address and your notice of assessment.

Why is my tax refund late?

Common reasons the CRA lists are a detailed review of your return, a request for more information or documents, multiple or special returns such as a bankruptcy or deceased-taxpayer return, and set-off against debts you owe, such as an amount owing to the CRA or some federal, provincial or territorial debts.

Does the CRA pay interest on late refunds?

It may. For 2025 returns, the CRA says compound daily interest on a refund starts on the latest of May 30, 2026, the 30th day after you filed, or the day you overpaid. Interest rates are set quarterly and published by the CRA.

What is the tax filing deadline?

For the 2025 tax year, the deadline for most people was April 30, 2026. Self-employed people, and people whose spouse or common-law partner is self-employed, had until June 15, 2026 to file, but any balance owing was still due April 30. The CRA has not published 2027 season dates on the pages Looni checked, so confirm them on the CRA's important dates page.

Will I get a refund of $2 or less?

Generally no. The CRA says it does not issue a refund if the amount is $2 or less.
